Have you ever worked with a talented computer programmer or statistician who is very proficient at coding and statistical modeling, but shows little or no interest in the biology behind your project? Or, have you ever worked with a data analysis person with a biology degree who has a perfect understanding of your project, but struggles to write more than 20 lines of code?

They shouldn't be blamed: biology and computer science (or statistics) are very different disciplines that involve fundamentally different types of complexity. They require different ways of thinking.

To truly excel in bioinformatics, however, requires mastery of both disciplines. Without a deep understanding of the biological complexity of the project, one will not be able to identify or develop the most relevant computational or statistical solutions. On the other hand, without adequate knowledge and skills in computation and statistics, one may resort to brute force or primitive solutions that at best waste time and resources, and at worst, don't work at all.

A typical LB at AccuraScience has a Ph.D. in biology or a related discipline, a M.S. in computer science, statistics, or a related discipline, several years of postdoctoral training, and several years of experience as a professor or principal investigator (PI) at a major U.S. institution. Their dual educational background in both biology/biomedicine and computer science/statistics enables them to have a deep understanding of both the biological problems and the computational/informatics/statistics solutions, and empowers them to solve difficult problems when others can't.
